Acting on Supreme Court orders, the Uttar Pradesh government on Thursday directed officials concerned to ensure removal of religious encroachments from public places in the state.

A directive to this effect was issued by Chief Secretary Alok Ranjan in compliance with the apex court order of September 29, 2009. The Chief Secretary asked all divisional commissioners, district magistrates, vice chairmen of development authorities and nagar ayukts among others to keep the religious sentiments of the people mind while removing such encroachments.

He asked them to make people aware as to how these encroachments affect the lives of common people, an official release here said.

"People should be made aware that most road accidents take place because of illegal construction and encroachments and cause traffic problems on special occasions and affect policing as force has to be deployed there," the release said.

For checking new encroachments, the help of eminent citizens, peace committees and religious persons could also be taken, the release said, adding public opinion should be built against these encroachments.

He also said utmost caution should be maintained at the time of removing encroachments and the land made free be developed immediately so that no fresh encroachment takes place.

Anti- encroachment drive in Banganga today

Eight officers each of the district administration and the IMC will conduct the operation. 25 religious places will be shifted.

Indore: The New ear’s maiden and major encroachment drive will be launched from Banganga Road, on Thursday. Over 125 encroachments and 25 religious places would face the action of joint- team of district administration, IMC and police.

The drive will begin from Banganga Rail Over Bridge ( ROB) end and the administration will deploy 8 officers for the purpose. In order to construct 2.2- km- long and 85 feet wide 4- lane road from Marimata Square to Banganga ROB, the district administration is going to launch the anti- encroachment drive from 10 am.

The drive is important because encroachments by some big- wigs of the BJP and the Congress like Vishnu Prasad Shukla also fall under the area. To maintain law and order, the police will assist the joint team there. However, to avoid any dispute, the encroachment removal operation will begin from the ROB- end instead of Marimata Square, where a displacement of an idol is required.

ADM Alok Singh issued an order in this regard on Wednesday evening. As per the order, it will be a joint operation of the district administration, police and Indore Municipal Corporation ( IMC).Official sources said that broadly 300 encroachments are coming in the way of road construction, out of which 25 are places of worship.

The planning of the administration is planning to shift all religious places to a temple complex, to be built in the compound of a government school.

WHY THIS DRIVE IS DRAWING ATTENTION

At one end of Marimata Square, local BJP leader Vishnuprashad Shukla has established a bronze idol of Lord Parshuram. Two feet land of the pedestal falls under the encroachment and displacement of the idol is a must.No amicable solution could be reached over the matter.

What is surprising is the silence maintained by Shukla on the issue but the administration is hell- bent to remove all the encroachments come what may.Encroachments to be removed from this road.
